About SALT

Questions are a way into a subject.

SALT is a small publication for essays that begin with the questions readers half-anticipate: what is this, who made it, why does it work this way, and what does the familiar version hide?

The short head is what most people recognize. The long tail is the specialist practice, historical accident, hidden interface, or unusual example that makes the subject worth learning.

Articles use primary sources and link to them inline. Dates and counts are stated carefully because a useful explanation should make its limits visible.
